How Automation Kicked My Ass....Twice

How Automation Kicked My Ass....Twice

I have to learn a new skill…again. The last time I had to do this I was learning accounting. Not that I am complaining, I do like learning new thinks, but it would be nice not to have my livelyhood get taken over by a machine.

In the beginning…

When I was 7 years old, I started playing the drums. I spent many years learning how to play in the Jazz style, so I considered myself a very accomplished musician. The plan was, after I graduated high school, to play in a band and see where that lead. As soon as I graduated, I started heaing drum machines in popular music. It did a good job at keeping a basic beat, good enough for the music of the time. Crap…no need for a drummer now. Damn…now what?

Fast forward 25 years…

Excel spreadsheets were a wonder when I started working accounts receivable in my first real job after college. We even created a basic database using Access. Fast forward 25 years, there is almost no need for an accountant. Transactions import into the accounting software. Reconciliations are much easier to do. Most small businesses are service based, since manufacturing has left the country. Give it a couple of years when the blockchain will take over and kill that job also. Damn…now what?

Final act…

Data Science here I come. This is the next logical step for someone with my skills and experience. I can better serve my clients with more predictive data analysis, instead of recording history. I’m looking forward to it. With all of this innovation how come house cleaning is still a thing? When are robots going to do that?
