It Doesn't Have To Be Perfect It Just Needs To Be Out There
Perfection and insecurity, a nice duo that stops us from putting our work out there. I don’t know about you, but I grew up in a time where if you failed you were treated like a loser. Not like now, where failure is part of later success.
With that in mind, I have spoken to clients, friends, acquaintances that are stuck with that mindset and the need for getting things perfect. As we know, perfect doesn’t exist, so why continue limiting ourselves to achieve it?
Hand in hand with perfect, is insecurity, my friends say “I don’t know if my stuff is good enough”. Well….you won’t know until you send it out into the world.
First of all, when you are starting off (whatever the project maybe), no one will be paying attention. You’ll be lucky if you get anyone to respond. Take whatever feedback you get, good or bad, and then adjust. Then you do it again, with every round the project gets better and better.
It took me a while to get to get out of this mindset and start putting my work out there. Here is my thinking on this. Basically, it comes down to:
I know that I don’t know what I’m doing.
I take a first pass.
I get punched in the face cause it kinda sucks.
I read, ask, research how to get it better.
Take another pass and it sucks less. Keep this cycle going.
Until one day, it’s better than the majority of what’s out there. I don’t go for perfect.
What is perfect anyway?
