Is Being So Productive Really Helping You?
Do we really need to be so productive? I asked myself this question a few years ago when I was feeling burned out from heavy networking (the 7 am kind), and keeping up with my client work. I really began to question what I was doing.
I decided to stop my networking efforts. I know, shock and horror how will I survive. I fired a couple of problem clients. You know the type, they grind you down just because. Now I have a client base that I really enjoy working with and time to write and engage in other creative endeavors.
Of course I don’t make as much income, but the time to myself and spending it with my kids and husband is way more important. I know on my deathbed I won’t remember the clients I stressed over just for an extra dollar. I’ll remember the vacations and funny moment I had with my family.
That’s just my situation, and I consider myself fortunate, but it begs a bigger question. Why do we have to be so productive? There is no shortage of articles that tell you how to 10x your efforts and maximize every waking minute or else your a loser. As an employee you certainly don’t see the fruits of that strategy. As far as being a small business owner/entrepreneur, also a small chance of huge gain. Mostly you are squeezing out small margins.
I just had a conversation with one of my clients who said “I feel like I am on a hamster wheel”, “I don’t know if all of this stress is worth it”. We started doing a financial analysis of her business and rework some thing to make her life easier.
I understand that we have to be productive to keep the basic needs covered, but this hyper productivity just doesn’t seem right.
So why do we put up with this?
