Why do we feel guilty about our hourly fee?
When I first started as a freelancer, I felt like I shouldn’t charge the going rate because of my lack of experience. However, hindsight being 20/20, I was very experienced. I had many years of working with accounting and accounting systems. One could argue that I was over qualified to work with small business owners. My feeling of inexperience came from being a new freelance/business owner, not in my technical skill.
For the past 14 years I have worked with new freelancers/business owners and I see some of them doing the same thing, particularly women. We are the ones usually charging below market rate for a variety of reasons.
Chances are you’ve gotten into business for yourself because you looked at what was out there and said “I can do better.” So why wouldn’t you be paid accordingly.
By short changing yourself, you are creating a race to the bottom which doesn’t help anybody. You will attract the kind of client that ends up grinding you down because they sense that they can, and you will end up resenting them. I am speaking from experience.
After years of trial and error, I have figured out which type of clients I can work with and have more successful outcomes. Oh, and they are more than happy to pay my fee.
